Isn’t It Romantic? is Netflix’s newest venture into the world of romantic comedy. As always with most romantic comedies, it tries so hard to break out of the mold of a generic one. It desperately tries to carve its own niche in an overly used genre. But the thing about this spectacular genre is that we’re always going to want to watch a romantic comedy. It’s in our blood. Whether we’re lonely or googly eyed disgustingly in love, there’s a romcom out there that will make us feel whole – with out without a partner. Anyway, Isn’t It Romantic? definitely breaks out of the generic seal. It’s a riot from start to finish.
Isn’t It Romantic? stars Rebel Wilson as a New York architect Natalie as it’s main lead. While she may not look like the perfect size zero heroine most romcoms have at the forefront, she is by far one of the best parts of the movie overall.
She hates famous romcoms and tells us so with good reason. However, in a strange turn of events she eventually gets stuck in exactly what she was ranting about. We’ve got every romcom cliche you could ever want packed along with Broadway worthy dance moves and music – but it’s PG-13 as Natalie sadly exclaims in the middle. Oh Natalie, we feel you.
When she wakes up with a concussion, the dreamy doctor who was examining her gets lost in her eyes. Soon, guys start looking her in the eye, flirting with her. Gone is the dingy hovel she lived in, she’s got the fanciest apartment in existence with everything she could ever want packed in it. When she leaves the hospital, she almost gets run over by a limousine, except she doesn’t because it’s all a silly fantasy after all. Out hops Liam Helmsworth (as Blake) who becomes instantly smitten with her. “Do you feel what I feel!?” he shouts. Yes, it’s all very swoon worthy. Her trusty sidekick friend at work, Josh (Adam Devine) whose never had a girlfriend in his life finds himself dating a swimsuit model (Priyanka Chopra).
Isn’t It Romantic? seems like a bit of a reluctant romcom at times when it mocks the very formula it ends up sitting perfectly in. Makes it a bit of a hypocrite isn’t it? But nevertheless, it’s an entertaining watch and you’re bound to have fun.
