“Look for the bare necessities
The simple bare necessities…..”

Personally, I have loved every single interpretation of the Rudyard Kipling classic so I enjoyed this one too. However, the animals with human faces may have taken it a bit far.

Netflix has made another version of the Jungle Book, shortly after the release of the Disney production of the same. Yes, the two are named differently but we can’t help but draw comparisons. Disney’s The Jungle Book was a box-office hit and received raving reviews from critics and audiences everywhere. It was fantastic movie. However, Netflix’s Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle is quite different so there aren’t that many parallels to draw.

Everyone’s heard of the Jungle Book. Even if you never read it or watched the episodes, you must have heard of “Bare Necessities”. If you don’t know what goes down, I’ll give you a rundown. Basically, Mowgli’s parents are eaten by a man-eating tiger who later comes back to hunt Mowgli. A panther rescues Mowgli and leaves him with wolves who take him in. He grows up in the jungle and is unable to reconcile with his human side when he’s older. As the jungle shrinks because of hunting and poaching the question becomes clear. What will Mowgli choose and is he the jungle’s last and only hope?

Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle is a very fresh interpretation of the classic. It doesn’t feature any singing or a human boy running around frolicking with animals. The environment is tense right from the movie starts and it’s clear, this is no Disney production. While I love the singing and jolly-making, I adore this dark visceral version as well. It’s not just the survival of fittest it’s so much more.

Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle boasts a star-studded cast. Benedict Cumberbatch as ferocious tiger Shere Khan, Christian Bale as paternal panther Bagheera, Cate Blanchette as snake Kaa, Naomie Harris as Raksha and so on. While this is all spectacular, the faces of the actors and actresses seem to have been superimposed on the animals’ faces. Motion-capture at it’s finest. It must have taken a lot of time and effort, the entire process being quite laborious but seeing minute human expressions on animal faces was a bit creepy. Maybe I’m just being weird about it but like I want a snake to look like a snake right?

It’s clear that the film spared no expense looking at the special effects but they probably should have spent more on the writing considering there are a lot of scenes where nothing happens, they just make the movie longer. Overall though it was enjoyable and for a Netflix release the scale was quite spectacular. Go give it a watch, I promise you’ll like it.
