“Story books are based on what, imagination? Where’s that come from? It has to come from somewhere. You know what the issue is with this world? Everyone wants a magical solution for their problem, and everyone refuses to believe in magic.” – Once Upon A Time
Fairy tales are stories that bring us joy and hope that stays with us, especially as children. It gives us the strength to believe in the purity of everything and create an imaginary world of our own and look for our happy endings. Not all films and shows have done justice to fairy tales – sometimes it’s too cheesy or shabby or even boring and predictable. However, Once Upon a time is one of the few that have successfully adapted fairy tales and created a promising show that everyone and every age group can truly appreciate.
Once Upon a time parallels between the real world and the fairy tale world throughout the seven seasons and we see stories unfolding in both worlds and they are all connected to one another. The main characters include – Snow White, Prince Charming, Emma Swan, Regina Mills, Henry Mills, Rumpelstiltskin and Captain Hook (season 2 onwards). Each one of these characters have their own journeys and stories and we see each one of them grow and develop. We go with them on a rollercoaster of adventures and emotions and by the end of the show, the emotional bond we form with these characters becomes unbreakable.
Once Upon a time does not present the stories exactly as they are in Disney movies. They are adapted and changed. The stories you would find in Once Upon a time are layered, carefully developed and fit into the overall plot line of the show. Snow White is not a damsel waiting to be rescued, she is a master of archery and has survived alone in the woods for years. Charming is not prince whose goal in life is to look for a princess – he wants to build his own life. The Evil Queen is not pure evil, she has a soul which longs for love. Rumpelstiltskin is not merely a magical imp, he is the most powerful practitioner of dark magic with the most dense history. These characters have intriguing and interesting backstories through which we learn about how they came to be, and we see them grow over the years.
Once Upon a time revolves around it’s main theme of ‘hope’ and ‘love’ and how these two have the ability to fix everything and turn the darkest hearts, good and make the people who have given up, believe in hope. The themes are very well crafted into the storyline. Snow White and Prince Charming will melt your heart time and again and the feels will hit you hard when the show comes to an end. They will make you believe in the possibility of true love, as it has made me (also, the actors are married in real life!). The characters encounter several other fairytale characters throughout the show and every character they come across brings in something new to their world.
If you are the kind of person that does not believe in fairy tales, I can assure you that Once Upon a time will get you to believe in them. You might think it’s going to be cheesy or lame, but trust me, it is everything but that. It has made me understand in the importance of belief, faith, hope and love – the strongest emotions. We need to learn to believe in and love ourselves, everything eventually falls in place. Henry Mills, in the starting of the show, asks us all to believe in magic – to believe everything is possible and certainly, we should all blindly listen to him because we all need it – magic. Snow White and Charming tirelessly propagate true love and hope. Emma Swan, Hook, Regina Mills and Rumpelstiltskin are the ones who teach us about the power of belief. So, never forget we all have magic around us, we just need to believe.
