Kingdom is Netflix’s latest Korean series horror show. It’s about zombies – but nothing like you’ve seen before. It’s brilliant. It ties in not just horrifying creatures but also family drama including politics.

Set in Korea’s Joseon period, the culture, nature and beautiful cinematography make this a pleasure to watch – even when heads start flying and flesh begins to rot. Remember World War Z and countless other zombie movies? The common theme among them is that they all take place in modern time that is, they include today’s technology and make it scarier by making it seem more plausible. Like, yes this could happen today – to you! Kingdom takes place centuries ago, that’s where it’s different. It’s the first of its kind.

The king has been ailing for a long time and a mysterious robed man (supposedly a doctor) has been treating him with some strange medicine – which we eventually learn turned him into a zombie complete with desire for human flesh.

Parallely, this king’s son Crown Prince Lee Chang (Ju Ji-hoon) is trying to get into the palace, to see his father. But his stepmom aka the king’s young queen won’t let him. She’s pregnant and is awaiting the gender of her child. If the baby is male, she wants her own son to be on the throne – not her stepson. The Prince sneaks into the palace, where he doesn’t find his father but sees a monster with the smell of rotting flesh.

The Prince sets off (with a personal bodyguard) to find exactly what happened to his father. They start by searching for the doctor who last saw the king. The doctor’s home is a small village called Dongnae. The people residing there have been dying of starvation.

We see the doctor return from the kingdom with the body of his assistant. The body has wounds that look like they’ve come from some sort of wild animal – this is a clear glimpse into what the zombies are capable of.

We also learn that the Prince – Chang – isn’t a legitimate child of the king. If the young queen’s baby is male, Chang will be prosecuted. So basically, he’s at cross hairs. When he reached Dongnae the zombie outbreak has spread. Who will get to him first? The zombies or the kingdom? Watch it to find out!

It’s not for the faint-hearted. There’s plenty of gore and violence. Its a zombie series, duh! But overall it’s brilliant! Give it a shot.
