Stranger Things created by the Duffer Brothers stepped into Netflix in July 2016 and created a landmark in the sci-if horror genre. The hyper tension and suspense with which the series unfolds leaves the audience to be breathlessly wanting for more and makes the Upside Down a place all of us want to venture into at least once.

Stranger Things starts off by introducing four best friends – Mike, Will, Lucas and Dustin playing Dunces and Dragons and fighting an enemy called the Demogorgon; which is a foreshadowing of the upcoming events and the enemy. The idea of the mysterious flickering of lights is also a constantly used technique to establish fear since every time the light flickers, the creature from the other dimension appears.

Will is then kidnapped by the Demogorgon and taken to the other dimension (upside down). His mom, Joyce frantically looks for him, and believes he is stuck in another dimension while everyone around her thinks she is crazy including her son, Jonathan. Jonathon and Nancy (Mike’s sister) figure out the truth eventually and begin looking for a way into the other dimension.

The four best friends befriend Eleven, a girl with psychokinetic abilities and finally find a way to the Upside Down. Sheriff Hopper who was skeptical of the the Hawkins Lab initially (where the portal to the other dimension was created), confirms his suspicions and decides to save Will by venturing into that dimension with Joyce. Steve, Nancy’s ex-boyfriend decides to mend his ways after humiliating Nancy in the beginning by saving Nancy and Jonathan from the Demogorgon.

Stranger Things is filled with characters that have you root for them. Each of their lives change after the presence Upside Down and Eleven is revealed. The Demogorgon keeps the audience on the edge of their seats and every time the light flickers of we see a drop of blood, we know it’s time for the characters to run for their lives. The best part of the Stranger Things is the balance between the strength of the Protagonist and the Antagonist and the suspense built around it. We know that Eleven has the capability to defeat the Demogorgon, but we don’t know the cost of it. At the same time we sometimes doubt her since she’s only a child and we don’t know the power the Upside Down wields.

The most important factor of the Stranger Things that keeps the audience going is the fact that it reveals information piece by piece and excellently sets up and pays of plots lines, characters, etc by presenting it to the audience at crucial moments. We slowly figure out about the Upside Down and the Hawkins Lab and not everything in one go, which makes us intrigued. All the pieces are put together by us – Elevens backstory, her father, creation of Upside Down and even the sub plots about Mike’s, Hopper’s and Will’s family. When the audience begins to think – that’s when they are invested and entertained the most.
