An apocalyptic drama series with an army team trying to rescue the world on a ship by finding the cure for a deadly virus: This encapsulates the plot of The Last Ship.

Starring Eric Dane in the lead as Admiral Tom Chandler, this drama series comprises of 5 seasons. The show starts with a US navy team lead by Tom Chandler departing on their ship – USS Nathan James on radio-silence under orders. They are harboring a doctor who’s trying to find the cure for a deadly virus that has been sweeping Earth clean. It’s extremely contagious and the victim is dead in a matter of seconds. It is the onset of the black death all over again.

Each season is short and comprises of 10-13 episodes. The story is compact, the plot is tightly knit together and the characters are well-developed and interesting.  The show is a fast-paced thriller, with action packed sequences and a compelling storyline. It is an entertaining show and each episode leaves us wanting more. They have one obstacle after another and although they are able to overcome them – the price is casualties. The problems start off with desperate people afflicted with the disease, followed by survivors who begin attacking the crew because they feel they were fated to be alive and need to be the rulers. While the lack of medicine is one problem, the government is another. It has fallen and the person left in charge wants to only save the best of the world’s population and let the rest die. The recurring issue of the government officials being corrupt plays a prominent role in some seasons of the show. The survivors are also another element that keeps rising and causing problems for them.

It is not only the survivors and the government that is an issue – soon we see that other countries begin to stand against Chandler and his team – sometimes because they want to have the cure for themselves and other times because they are planning on a mass massacre to keep the best alive in order to create the perfect race. Across the four seasons – we see many deaths, struggles, and sacrifices. Relationships are broken, formed and even restored. It is not a mere post-apocalyptic journey we go on with them, it is an emotional one as well.

Overall, it is an entertaining and gripping show that will leave you wanting for more.
